35 Years

Lauren Martin

Lauren Martin has been a psychotherapist in private practice since 1994. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker having received her MSW from the Hunter School of Social Work. She then attended the Training Institute for Mental Health for an eclectic analytic training. She received a certificate in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy.

Additionally, Lauren has 35 years of addiction and trauma specialization. She works with individuals, groups, and couples, intervening with standard psychodynamic issues and is an expert at addressing substance, sex, and love addiction problems. With years of trauma and addiction specialization she is trained in a variety of modalities (CBT, PIT, EMDR, Attachment Theory, NFT and more).

She has perfected the rare style of modern analytic work and behavioral competence integrating these two areas of expertise which is atypical.

Philosophy

Most therapists remain in polarized camps in that they train in either psychoanalytic psychotherapy or cognitive behavioral models. The limitation of both of these therapies practiced in isolation is that people remain stuck in one of two areas:

  • They gain significant intellectual knowledge or insight but cannot shift their behavior.

OR

  • They keep managing behavioral symptoms that continuously return because they don’t resolve the underlying triggers of said behavior.

True healing requires a marriage of spiritual, intellectual and emotional development. Once those areas synchronize, serenity is possible. After many years in private practice, I have discovered that I bring a rare skill set to the craft of therapy that allows this synchronicity to manifest. I’m well versed in both addiction/trauma theory and I am analytically trained. Because of my own intense work on myself, I am unafraid to go where clients lead me emotionally. By creating that environment, there is a shift in not just the psyche but the soul.

People become able to live as they were meant to by integrating the profound emotional shifts that come with this model.

Forms of contact

After decades of face-to-face practice in New York City, I moved to the the Bay Area twelve years ago and began to work virtually. I was fascinated by the way that patients were able to reveal themselves online from the comfort and relaxation of their own home. The barriers of needing to go back out into the world after a session (and the freedom from commuting) provide patients with more useable time. Additionally, I enjoy gaining a more comprehensive understanding of my clients, which is derived by seeing their personal spaces.

Intensives and Interventions

I facilitate interventions for many addictive disorders and I have been hired to work with couples and individuals at a crisis points in their lives or relationships. It is an intensive form of treatment that can last for multiple hours a day, and from three to twelve consecutive days. The recommended period of treatment is determined after an evaluation of the patient or system’s current situation.

After 30 years of experience

I have encountered and am proficient in the work of most diagnoses. But I do have a specialty that I’ve cultivated for 35 years in addictions. I work with polysubstance abuse, eating disorders and sex and love addiction. I’m able to help people manage the underlying issues that drive addiction by first helping them manage their symptoms, and second, by working with the underlying pain that drives them so that relapse is less likely.

The crux of all addictions is an intolerance of human emotion that manifests in obsessive compulsive preoccupation with a substance. The painful impact of that on a life or a family system is stunting and influences the development of everyone in that system. Intervention provides relief and possibility.

True healing requires a marriage of spiritual, intellectual and emotional development.
